Susan P. Milam, PhD, LMSW, is Government Relations Director for the Texas Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. Dr. Milam holds a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education from Concordia University in River Forest, Illinois, a Masters Degree in Social Work and a PhD in Health Policy from the University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Milam was contracted as a consultant to NASW/TX in spring of 2009 to develop the Texas Chapter’s 5-year implementation plan for the Social Work Reinvestment Initiative. Previously in 2005-2009, she served as Deputy Commissioner for the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services and from 2000-2005 as Director of Marketing and Business Development for MyDocOnline, a web-based messaging system for physicians. Dr. Milam also served as Bureau Chief of the Texas Medicaid Managed Care program in 1999-2000; as Executive Director of Austin Regional Independent Associates (an independent practice association of physicians) from 1996-1999; as Director of the Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services Department from 1989-1996; and as Director of Marketing and Development for Austin Regional Clinic from 1983-1989. She was an elementary school teacher and preschool director early in her career.
Dr. Milam previously has taught public policy as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Texas at Austin Graduate School of Social Work.
