LBSW Licensing Review Course

Thursday, October 5, 2017, 8:00 am-11:30am

3 CEUs

 

This workshop will benefit individuals preparing for the Basic Level (Licensed Baccalaureate Social Worker) exam. This course covers a broad overview of the major concepts and knowledge base applicable to the generalist LBSW exam; essential in helping guide participants’ study. Seating is limited to the first 45 registrants. $40 fee for materials. Fee must be paid by September 20 to hold seat.

 

About the presenter: Cecilia Thomas, PhD, LMSW-AP, is Associate Professor and Program Director of the undergraduate social work program at the University of North Texas where she has taught across the curriculum.  Prior to a career in academia, she had extensive practice experience in mental health, child welfare, and medical social work.


 

LMSW Licensing Review Course

Thursday, October 5, 2017, 8:00 am-6:00 pm

This workshop will prepare MSWs to take the Association of Social Work Board's LMSW exam. Areas reviewed are: Human Development and Behavior in the Environment, Diversity and Social/Economic Justice; Assessment, Diagnosis & Intervention Planning; Practice; Communication; Professional Relationships; Values and Ethics; Supervision, Administration, and Policy; Practice Evaluation/Utilization of Research; Service Delivery; and the new DSM-5 component. Seating is limited to the first 50 registrants. $55 fee for materials. Fee must be paid by September 20 to hold seat.

 

About the presenters: Elizabeth Cruz, LMSW  works for New Life Ministries of San Antonio, as a program director. Prior to she worked at Seton with pregnant and parenting teens. She also worked at SACHRC, where she developed a case management model for one of San Antonio's largest food pantry. She also worked for SAMMinistries where she developed their Homeless Prevention Program.  The majority of her experience comes from working at Casey Family Programs. 

 

Ellie Saucedo, LMSW-IPR is the Director of Field Education Services for Good Samaritan Community Services in San Antonio.  She also works on Collaborative Divorce teams, conducts adoption home studies and is a certified IPR Supervisor.

 


 

The Mini-Mental State Examination-2 (MMSE-2): Administration, Interpretation, and Implications for practice settings

This workshop will focus on the Mini-Mental State Examination-2 (MMSE-2) and proper application of this instrument by social work practitioners. Participants will gain knowledge and skills relating to accurate administration, scoring procedures, and interpretation of the MMSE-2. The discussion will include the meaning of results, how to apply MMSE-2 data in a practice setting, and participants will gain supervised experience with MMSE-2. $70 fee for manual and materials. Limited to 25 attendees. Fee must be paid by September 20 to hold seat.

 

About the presenter: Thomas W. Starkey, Ph.D., LCSW, is an Assistant Professor and the Social Work Program Director at Angelo State University, Department of Psychology, Sociology, and Social Work. He is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Texas. Dr. Starkey's professional interest include: Aging/Gerontology, Ethics, Health/Mental Health, Social Work Policy, and Substance Abuse.

 


  

Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) certification

This training is an introduction to Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) and targets the four areas identified as essential to competences by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. These foundations include understanding prevention, understanding addiction, treatment knowledge, application to practice, and professional readiness.

Participants will develop important SBIRT skills. These include screening for substance use disorders, essential motivational interviewing skills, brief intervention, and referral to treatment. Certificates issued at end of the session. Seating is limited to the first 50 registrants. $20 fee includes materials. Fee must be paid by September 20 to hold seat.

 

About the presenters: Bernadette Hassan Solórzano, PsyD is Professor of Psychology and the Clinic Director of the University’s Graduate training clinic, Community Counseling Service.  Dr. Solórzano received her Doctorate in Counseling Psychology in 2001 from our Lady of the Lake University. She is a Certified Trainer with the Heart and Soul of Change Project. Dr. Solórzano has worked many years with families with children with chronic health issues including organ transplants and cancer. She has also obtained a federal grant to work with inner city at risk youth from a strength based perspective with positive outcomes for the youth involved. Dr. Solórzano joined the faculty at OLLU in 2003 in a visiting position for one year and then hired fulltime after that. She is now a tenured full professor.  After the University received a grant to implement SBIRT in several of our programs, she has conducted several trainings on how to implement SBIRT into practice. The Community Counseling Service is situated in the low income neighborhood of the westside of San Antonio and serves low income population. Her research interests are in client directed feedback, supervision and training and working with immigration and trauma situations. She is passionate about her work with undocumented individuals and conducts psychological evaluations. She collaborated with the Rape Crisis Center in obtaining a federal grant with Human Trafficking in conjunction with the San Antonio Police Department and will serve as the evaluator using PCOMS. Dr. Solórzano presents frequently at conferences.

 

Dr. Gomez is currently Director of the Worden School of Social Service at OLLU.  She collaborates on the SBIRT Competency and Dissemination Project.  In 2016 she studied as Professional in Residence at the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation.  She currently serves as a track chair for the CSWE Addictions Track and reviewer for Addiction, Recovery, and After-Care.

 

Deborah Healy, PsyD is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU).  Dr. Healy is the Chair of the Department of Psychology at OLLU and the Training Director of the OLLU PsyD Program in Counseling Psychology.  She is a Texas Licensed Psychologist, Licensed Professional Counselor, and TEA Certified School Counselor.  Dr. Healy is a graduate of Syracuse University (the Utica College), State University of New York at Albany, and Our Lady of the Lake University.  She has been full time faculty at OLLU since 2014.  Dr. Healy retired from The Northside Independent School District (NISD) where she worked from 1986 to 2014, serving students as a classroom teacher, Reading Specialist, School Counselor, and Director of Counseling Services for NISD. She was also the Director of the Federally funded Safe Schools/ Healthy Students grant in NISD, which brought prevention and intervention to all 120 NISD campuses. Dr. Healy has been an SBIRT trainer since 2015.  Her research interests include working with children, teens and families from strengths-based perspectives.
