2016 NASW/TX Award Recipients Announced

The NASW/Texas Awards seek to honor the achievements of NASW/Texas Members throughout their professional careers, as well as recognize the contributions of publicly-elected officials, public citizens, and members of the media who uphold the values and mission of social work. The 2016 Award Recipients will be honored during the Opening Plenary at the 40th Annual State Conference at the Arlington Convention Center in Arlington, Texas, on October 6, 2016.

Modernization Panel Discussion Offered at Conference


NASW/Texas President Lucía Leo-Díaz, LCSW, BCD leads a panel discussion on the topic of the recently-enacted NASW Modernization and Revitalization Plan at the 40th Annual State Conference on Thursday, October 6, 2:30-4:00pm. Ms. Diaz will be joined by Region XI Representative to National Board of Directors Dr. Larry Watson, LCSW and NASW/Texas Executive Director Miriam Nisenbaum, LMSW, ACSW. The discussion will focus on the changes that have occurred within NASW since July 1, 2016, and the changes to be implemented over the next 2 years that will affect the Texas membership. There will be time for questions and answers from attendees. Join us!

Understanding the "Dear Colleague Letter"

There has been some confusion as to the purpose and application of the “Dear Colleague” letter issued by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of Education (DOE). Clarification of the letter requires an understanding of how the Civil Rights Act of 1964 Title VII and the Education Act of 1972 Title IX have been interpreted to include protections for transgenders. Through a series of case law, an understanding of the word “sex” has evolved to be inclusive of the term “sexual stereotyping." Therefore, how sexual stereotyping covers discrimination against transgenders will be explained. Read more.


LCSWs in Texas Medicaid to Receive an Independent Listing

At long last, State Medicaid will correct the Fee for Service listing for LCSWs. Effective October 1, 2016, Licensed Clinical Social Workers in Texas will be removed from the the Durable Medical Equipment category and will have a separate listing, LCSW, just like the other behavioral health providers. While this may seem like an insignificant change, it is not. It is the result of many years of hard work by Former NASW/Texas Exective Vicki Hansen, LMSW-AP, ACSW and NASW/Texas Clinical Reimbursement Project Director Charlotte Cooper. This change wouldn't be possible without the support of NASW/Texas Member and State Representative Elliott Naishtat who promoted its passing through the legislature and to whom we give great thanks.
