Update on the Social Work Board

On June 8, Governor Abbott called a Special 30-day Session for the Texas Legislature, and ordered it to begin on July 18, 2017. Governor Abbott listed 20 items that he wants to see addressed in the 30 days, but made it clear that the mental health and medical boards must be dealt with first. He stated the legislature must pass Sunset bills for the boards before any other bills can be considered and he expects this to happen within the first three days of the session. Read more.

Chapter Election Results!

Congratulations to our newly-elected Chapter leadership! We look forward to accomplishing great things together. We recognize and are grateful for all candidates this election cycle. Many thanks to all of you for your willingness to serve. We also extend tremendous appreciation to our outgoing leaders, who so diligently served the association and our profession. See the full list of new leaders.

The Ending of the 85th

After hearing that our board will be the primary focus of the Special Session beginning July 18, I can’t help but think back to how our board was used as a bargaining chip, as Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick made it very clear that he was not happy with the bathroom and property tax bills sent to the Senate by the House. Read more from NASW/TX Gov't Relations Director.

NASW/TX Confronts Humana Over Tricare Reimbursement Decrease

Members brought to our attention that they were getting notices from Humana as current Value Options Tricare providers, advising them of Humana taking over the Tricare contract.  They were given a form letter saying that there will be a 35% decrease in reimbursement rates from what Value Options is currently paying. We also heard from some other chapter execs in the “western” area that their members had received similar communication. We reached out to John Cornyn’s (Texas Senator) office about this and were able to set up a conference call with a staffer from his office assigned to monitor this. Read more

TX Adult Adoptees Denied Equal Rights of Access to Original Birth Certificates...Again

Texas Adoptee Rights began the 2017 legislative process with great optimism, submitting Senate Bill 329 before the start of session. The bill’s intent; to restore equal access for adult adoptees to their own original birth certificates. This is the 11th consecutive session that adoption groups have requested legislative action on this inequality. Similar bills in the Texas legislature date back as far as 1991. Since 1974, in the state of Texas, when an individual is adopted, the original birth certificate (“OBC”) is sealed in perpetuity to all parties. An amended birth certificate is issued stating that the adoptee was born to the adoptive parent/s. Prior to 1974, this was not the case, and adult adoptees were able to obtain their OBC upon request.
