Hurricane Harvey Resources & Updates

Our hearts are with all of our members and Texas neighbors that were significantly impacted by Hurricane Harvey. If you are in need of assistance, please let the Chapter know what we can do to help. Also, please visit the NASW/Texas Facebook page and NASW/Texas homepage where we are continually sharing disaster relief resources, as well as volunteer and donation opportunities for those who want to help.

Note, TSBSWE has extended the August license renewal deadline by 30 days for those in areas affected by Hurricane Harvey.

We've received some inquiries and wanted to clarify there have been no changes in plans for the 41st Annual NASW/Texas State Conference to be held in Galveston on October 5-7. Fortunately, neither the Galveston Island Convention Center nor the host hotels were damaged by the storm. Your attendance at the conference will benefit the community and economy of Galveston so let's show our support, just like we did after Hurricane Ike in 2008.

TPACE: Your Political Action Committee!

Do you know what a Political Action Committee, or "PAC", is?  In case you have heard that term before but never really knew what a PAC is or does...it’s “a group formed (as by an industry or an issue-oriented organization) to raise and contribute money to the campaigns of candidates likely to advance the group's interests.” (from Miriam -Webster). A PAC is a way to get directly involved in politics and it helps put people in office who are supportive of the issues we champion. Read more.

SB 20 Passage Extends Social Work Licensing Board

On Friday August 11, SB 20 was signed into law by Governor Abbott. It went into effect immediately, thus extending our licensing board, the other mental health boards, and the medical board until 2019. This temporarily closes the door on the long and arduous road for our board during the regular and special sessions but means we'll have to return next session and address our reauthorization all over again.
