Private Practice in a Box - What You Need to Know to Open and Sustain a Thriving Practice

Wouldn’t it be amazing if you just could click a button and order everything you need to start and grow your own private practice?  Like, in a box that gets delivered to your house with 2 day shipping?  The box would have a lawyer in it, an accountant, an advertising exec, an organizer, and a therapist, too, along with forms and a sofa and probably a bunch of chocolate.

Okay, that’s a fantasy, but it’s also the working model of what we tried to create with this workshop.  “Private Practice in a Box” exists because the NASW-TX wants to help equip therapists starting their private practice with knowledge, support and guidance. Starting a private practice is hard--but we can help. This professional development series has 6 videos, each one an hour long. They can be taken separately or as a package (most cost effective).  See below for details of what each video covers!

About the SERIES

Private Practice in a Box Session #1: The First 6 Steps
What are the very first steps a therapist should take when considering or starting a private practice? We will guide you through decisions about location, communication, business formation, insurance, basic financial issues, and paperwork.

Private Practice in a Box Session #2: Legal Issues
In session #2, you’ll get an overview on major legal issues likely to affect private practice therapists, including HIPAA, and Texas state laws like mandated reporting, and duty to warn. We’ll address the top legal questions private practitioners ask, including subpoenas, testifying, record retention, record requests, charging for records, and psychotherapy notes.

Private Practice in a Box Session #3: Risk Management & Financial Issues
Vulnerability and risk are ever-present in private practice, but a little caution and foresight can reduce both significantly. In this video, we’ll guide you to create policies and practices that help you to minimize risk.  What can be learned from typical board complaints? What clinical issues are most risky?  What are common problem areas? We will guide you to create and run your practice in a way that takes care of clients AND reduces your liability. This video also covers important financial issues including fee-setting, tax implications, banking advice, and sliding scale fees.

Private Practice in a Box Session #4: The Emotional Experience of Starting Your Own Private Practice
Becoming a therapist in solo private practice is a roller coaster of emotions. From fear and regret to joy and pride, and everything in between… it’s likely you will feel All The Feels at some moment in the process. This video brings in reflection and advice from a large group of therapists, with private practice experience ranging from 2 years to more than 2 decades. We’ll also look honestly at how private practice can trigger personal “stuff,” and you’ll be guided to make a plan to take good care of yourself as you proceed.

Private Practice in a Box Session #5: Insight-Oriented Business Growth
Very few graduate school programs for therapists include business education, but if you’re in private practice, you’ve got to get that information somewhere.  To start, we'll share the core concepts that make a transformative difference in building your business. The video will also cover how to determine what kinds of clients you wish to serve, how to find and attract those clients, and how to communicate about your services in an effective and ethical way. This video is great for beginners as well as those who wish to grow their practices.

Private Practice in a Box Session #6: Effective and Ethical Advertising for Therapists
Can therapists advertise? (Yes!) This video assumes that you’ve got limited time and money to devote to advertising, and guides you in ways that maximize the results of your efforts. Free or low-cost methods, advertising for introverts, advertising for extroverts, do it yourself methods, and places where hiring a pro is a great idea. Plus, what are the ethical rules that govern how therapists market their services?  Can you use social media? This video is designed to help you learn how to get the word about your practice out, and to drive in referrals in an ethical way.

Each session is 1 hour long. 1 CE hour per module.

Important note:

We will be adding to the series this fall and have a free standing course on Accepting 3rd Party Payments for Services (Medicare, Medicaid and Insurance), so please stay tuned for this section!
