Meet NASW/Texas President, Lucia Leo-Diaz, LCSW, BCD

Hi, my name is Lucia and I am proud to be your new President. My informal social work career began when I was living in Mexico and moved to the US at the age of nine. Since we didn’t know English (except for my American, WWII Veteran father), I began advocating for my family at that time. My 55 year old father was battling cancer at the Houston VA hospital when he moved us to Mission, Texas. I usually had to speak/interpret for my mother and was also tasked with riding my bicycle into town to run errands/pay bills as my mother did not drive. My father died that year and my 37 year old mother raised all six of us on her own while working at the school cafeteria. Read more.

NASW Membership Dues to Increase this October

After much consideration, the national board of directors approved a dues increase of 18 percent. This change will go into effective October 1, 2015. The regular annual member dues will increase from $190 to $225. Other categories will increase proportionally. In response to the financial concerns of our members, NASW has held dues rates steady for 10 years. During this time, the cumulative cost of living (COLA) has increased by approximately 22 percent. NASW must increase dues in order to offer valuable products, services and experiences for members and to effectively represent social workers at the local and national levels. The association is offering a couple of different payment options to members for a limited time. Read more.
