NASW/TX is relieved to see an executive order halting the separation of families at the border.  The Chapter is very concerned about how the children who have been separated over the last two months will be reunited with their families and how long that will take.  We also want details on how these families and children's trauma which was inflicted upon them by this policy will be handled by the Administration.  We call on Congress to author and pass significant and comprehensive immigration legislation that deals with "Dreamers", political refugees, immigrants escaping violence, as well as how to appropriately deal with persons who cross the borders for other reasons.  This legislation would require bipartisan cooperation and a humane approach in dealing with all people.  We decry the demeaning and name calling of people who cross the border, this is not defensible and is Unamerican to refer to people in any way that diminishes their humanity simply because they try to enter our country.

NASW released a statement on  May 30 about the egregious zero immigration policy that would prosecute families that attempt to cross the border and separate children from parents. NASW will push Congress to rescind this Trump Administration policy.

Here is our full statement.
