August 2018 Edition of "The Social Work Vote" Released

Welcome to Issue 3 of the The Social Work Vote. We hope you’ve found these newsletters informative, inspiring and full of ideas you can use in your own voting advocacy. We want to see every NASW member voting in November, as we truly believe that our voices are necessary to the political conversations happening across the state, and that social workers need to lift up the issues that matter to them most.

And speaking of tools, I wanted to highlight a fantastic resource out of the UConn School of Social Work. It’s called “Voting Is Social Work,” and you can find more resources and info at www.VotingIsSocialWork.org. On the website you’ll find online tools that can be used in schools and the community, research, videos and articles you can reference for your own advocacy, ways to pledge to participate in the process, and a mailing list you can sign-up for to get updates about developing opportunities. The goals of the campaign are to:

Raise awareness of the importance of voting to social work practice and social policy;

Integrate voter engagement activities into class and field education for all micro and macro students;

Provide information about voter mobilization skills and strategies to field instructors, students and faculty for use in agencies and the classroom, and

Ensure that all the people served by social workers have access to the vote.

The polls in Texas show a lot of uncertainty around a variety of races, and the PAC of NASW TPACE (Texas Political Action for Candidate Election) is currently working on a bipartisan list of endorsements that will be published prior to the November elections. You can use that list to help determine who to support, as well as funding campaigns you can donate time and/or money to. The resources at Voting Is Social Work can help you get others interested in the process, and help start agency-wide conversations about the need to get out and get involved.

As always, we would love your input.  Want to write an article for The Social Work Vote?  Know of a campaign we should look into endorsing?  Got a story about something at school or in your personal life that you want to share to a larger audience?  Feel free to reach out to me at wfrancis.naswtx@socialworkers.org and we’ll get you plugged in. Texas is a big state, and we want to capture stories from every corner. Together we can shape the future of our state through our voices and our votes.
