The Senior Systems Administrator is responsible for the administration and maintenance of NASW’s network operations, including on-site and hosted environments. The Senior System Administrator ensures that Information Technology services and operations are continuous, secure, accurate, technologically up-to-date, efficient and well-utilized.

The Senior Systems Administrator is also responsible for the selection, installation and maintenance of network hardware, software, and other equipment as required. This includes the documentation of procedures, provision of end-user support, and training as necessary.


  1. Maintains NASW’s computer environment and data communication network. Continuously monitors system performance, providing regular status reports and adjusting equipment and protocols as necessary to achieve efficiency and utilization targets.
  2. Provides technical direction on network topologies, server configurations, hardware/software deployments, firewall configurations and other administrative tasks related to the staging and maintenance of development, testing and production servers. Facilitates design sessions and architectural reviews as needed.
  3. Recommends improvements, efficiencies and effectiveness of computer operations, including user services, general network performance, and configuration management.
  4. Documents network architecture maintenance and administration procedures.
  5. Troubleshoots network hardware, software, web servers and other network peripherals. Includes audio/visual equipment, telecommunications services and equipment, the badge entry system, and other systems as needed. Resolves complex problems to ensure minimal disruption to users.
  6. Handles escalated help desk calls and other help desk calls as needed. Provides Mac support.
  7. Serves as liaison to network vendors and coordinates computer hardware and software vendor maintenance activities in compliance with vendor agreements.
  8. Maintains system security. Designs and maintains fault-tolerant systems and develops security procedures. Performs backups of all centrally-located computer software and databases and oversees security compliance of managed computer software and databases. Maintains a secure disaster recovery plan.
  9. Maintains specific network applications and coordinates upgrades on multiple platforms and configurations.
  10. Keeps abreast of new technology. Recommends adoption of new technologies as appropriate and oversees implementation.
  11. Assists in the annual budgeting process and with analyzing the on-going costs of operation.



  1. Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. Able to identify root causes and work creatively to resolve problems, balancing economic and strategic considerations and weighing the impact of actions on other departments.
  2. Exhibits sound judgment by taking appropriate action in situations of concern or requiring escalation.
  3. Demonstrated analytical, quantitative, and budget planning/monitoring skills.
  4. Excellent communicator (both verbal and written), including the ability to interface effectively at the executive level and across the organization.
  5. Effective interpersonal and organizational skills, including a strong customer service orientation.
  6. Strong project management skills. Must be able to plan, organize, and lead projects and tasks effectively while paying close attention to details, identifying deliverables and meeting timelines.
  7. Demonstrates initiative in staying current with new technologies and recommending system improvements that enhance operational effectiveness.


  1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a technical discipline such as computer science, information services or related field (required).
  2. Microsoft Certification (preferred).
  3. Extensive knowledge of Microsoft products including Windows Server, Exchange and Office. Mac expertise also required.
  4. Extensive knowledge of hardware and software installation, testing and operation.
  5. Knowledge of business process and workflow analysis.
  6. Knowledge of data communications, telecommunications, and audio-visual equipment.


Requires 6-8 years’ experience in a large area network environment designing and analyzing network systems.

Provides senior level programming, support and maintenance of NASW’s internal and website applications as well as support projects that involve membership and other databases. Provides modifications and customization to Website server systems and supporting applications. Generates reports as required. Work activities are performed under general supervision.


  1. Analyzes proposed system requirements and designs application systems that meet proposed requirements. Responsible for documenting, designing, programming, testing, implementing, and maintaining NASW software application systems using the systems development life cycle (SDLC) model.
  2. Responsible for operational and day-to-day activities in connection with software applications. Develops and generates reports from related databases/systems.
  3. Assists NASW project teams and other IT staff with software systems initiatives including web, back-end, and database.
  4. Responsible for the development and maintenance of NASW software applications and associated documentation.
  5. Responsible for the configuration management and support of the software applications.
  6. Functions as the backup staff to the Database Administrators and other Software Developers.
  7. Communicates regularly with the Database Administrators, Web Services Department, and IT staff to ensure the integrity of all projects.
  8. Interfaces with confidential databases to create/maintain NASW software applications.
  9. Writes programs that interfaces with other databases and systems as assigned.
  10. Interfaces with applications vendors as required.
  11. Provides after-hours technical and application support as needed.
  12. Other duties as assigned.



  1. Excellent computer skills including, VB Scripts, HTML, XML, JavaScript, ASP.Net, VB.Net, C#, MVC, Object Oriented Design and Programming, ADO.NET, LINQ, Entity Framework, IIS and SQL programming.
  2. Excellent analytical skills and the ability to problem-solve, exercise sound judgment and make decisions based on accurate and timely analyses.
  3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to
    effectively communicate with non-technical end user departments to develop requirements and deliver projects to the client’s satisfaction.
  4. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and exemplify leadership and composure under pressure.


  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related field (preferred).
  2. Knowledge of implementing and maintaining standard software architecture frameworks. Experience in SharePoint management, DotNetNuke and Crystal Reports preferred. Background in the SDLC model and in development of supporting SDLC software

  1. Requires strong clinical expertise; analytical ability; and ability to conduct studies and to work effectively with members and volunteers.
  2. Must have skills in communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.
  3. Must have strong public speaking skills as well as research and assessment skills and the ability to summarize information into clear, organized, factually sound, persuasive and objective reports.


  1. Master's degree in Social Work required from an accredited school of social work.
