Essential Supervisory Competencies for Texas Licensure & Practice Join Libby Kay, LCSW-S, ACSW and Linda Openshaw, DSW, LCSW-S, ACSW at this enriching clinical supervision training designed to provide you with the essential knowledge and skills necessary for a successful and fulfilling experience as an LCSW Supervisor in Texas.
This is a 40-hour, BHEC-approved training and is comprised of two days of online instruction, followed by independent coursework. Libby and Linda have conducted this training since 2014 and continually update the content with the latest rule changes and information, so you are prepared to supervise MSWs with cutting-edge knowledge on today’s regulations and best practices.
COURSE OBJECTIVES You’ll gain a deeper understanding of supervisory techniques, ethical considerations, best practices, and useful tools to excel in your new role as an LCSW Supervisor through online discussions, examination of case studies, and requirements for hands-on self-guided learning, such as interviewing a current social work supervisor, securing supervision teaching resources for future use, and creating a supervision plan that is compliant with current guidelines.

- Understanding the context of supervision
- Navigating autonomous social work practice in supervision
- Phases of supervision: beginning, middle, and end
- Evaluation techniques for supervision (including self-evaluation)
- Harnessing technology for supervision and practice, including a discussion of artificial intelligence (AI)
- How to create an effective learning environment by understanding adult learning styles
- Overview of supervision functions, professional development, and relationship dynamics
- Exploring authority, power dynamics, and transference/countertransference
- Embracing culture humility, diversity, and spirituality in supervision
- Documentation and record keeping best practices for BHEC compliance
- Creating supervision contracts
- Ethical considerations in self-care
- Ethical issues in clinical practice and NASW Code of Ethics, TSBSWE Code of Conduct
- Utilizing DSM and addressing diagnostic bias
This workshop meets Board licensure requirements: 40 CEUs, including 12 Ethics, 6 Cultural Competency, and 6 Clinical Supervision CEUs.

Libby Kay, MSSW, LCSW-S, ACSW currently provides clinical care and clinical supervision at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where she has worked for 35 years. Libby is past president of the NASW Texas Chapter and serves as a consultant to the NASW National Ethics committee. She has created and presented this BHEC-approved supervision course since 2014.
