Kelsey Blahnik, LCSW-S

Member Since:
2011

Why did you join NASW?
I adore social workers! It's so easy to connect with others in this role that are passionate about improving people's quality of life and being a part of our community.

What company or organization do you work at right now? If you’re retired, where did you last work?
I am self-employed as the owner of The And Way Therapy.

How has your career benefited from being a member?
I have received so much guidance and encouragement throughout my career when making both big and small professional decisions.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to enter social work?
Practice "change and acceptance" constantly. "This is what I can change/what I'm in control of" and "this is what is out of my control that I am accepting (not approving of, just accepting) in this moment."

What do you love most about social work?
The versatility it provides. We can work with so many different populations and in so many different roles from clinical work to case management to advocacy... you can pivot your career to match the season you're in.

What’s a project you’re working on right now? Why is it meaningful to you?
I am currently promoting my book The And Way: Assertive Peacemaking in a Divided World, which explores how we can hold complexity, tension, and opposing truths without forcing ourselves into binary thinking. It’s meaningful to me because I’m passionate about finding ways to feel confident in my convictions while living in community with neighbors (and clients) who see the world very differently than I do. Ultimately, this project is about helping people stay grounded in who they are and remain connected, even when disagreement is present.

List any professional awards you have received:
I became an ASWB Nationally approved CEU provider this year!

Share a fun fact about yourself!
My favorite activities are reading, hiking, dancing, and watching films.

Anything else?
I love teaching about the complex intersection of politics, ethics, and social work in workshops or other settings.
