Course Summary:
Socratic questioning is an evidence-based intervention and a foundational component of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Despite its importance, many clinicians report difficulty using Socratic questioning effectively, particularly when working
with trauma-related beliefs such as self-blame, hindsight bias, and cognitive “stuck points” that interfere with treatment progress.
This training focuses on enhancing clinician skill in the use of Socratic questioning within CBT and trauma-informed
practice. Participants will learn to identify effective questioning strategies, recognize common clinician errors, and apply advanced techniques to support cognitive flexibility and emotional processing. Instruction will include didactic presentation,
case examples, demonstration, and guided experiential practice.
Target Audience: Mental health professionals, including clinical social workers, clinical psychologists, and counselors; graduate students welcome.
Objectives:
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:
- Describe the purpose and goals of Socratic questioning within cognitive behavioral therapy.
- Identify key characteristics of effective Socratic questioning and differentiate open-ended, curiosity-based questions from less effective questioning styles.
- Demonstrate the use of Socratic questioning to examine trauma-related beliefs, including self-blame and hindsight bias.
- Apply strategies to address situations in which clients intellectually accept alternative thoughts but remain emotionally fixed.
- Integrate advanced Socratic questioning techniques into case conceptualization across trauma and non-trauma clinical presentations.
Instructional Methods:
- Lecture and didactic presentation
- Case study review and clinical analysis
- Live demonstration
- Guided role-play and experiential exercises
