New Public Charge Rule Threatens Immigrant Families: Submit Your Comments

We are currently in the public comment period for the new public charge rule that the Trump administration has proposed. Here is a summary of the harms this rule creates for immigrant and mixed-status families:

"These changes are likely to have a large chilling effect on immigrants’ willingness to access critical benefits, for themselves and their families. As the preamble itself acknowledges, this could cause harm to families, communities, health care providers, food retailers and more. DHS  estimates that if implemented, the rule would reduce government (federal and state) spending on benefit programs by $9 billion each year. As very few immigrants who do not already have green cards are now eligible for public benefits, almost all of this impact is likely to come from reduced use by U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents, especially children."

The Protecting Immigrant Families (PIF) coalition has created a Template Comment for Direct Service Providerswho would like to submit comments of their own. The template comment is designed to cover stories from direct service providers about the chilling effect of the proposed changes to public charge, the negative consequences of loss of benefits, and the ways that clients and agencies have relied on previous regulations are all potentially helpful for future challenges to a harmful rule. Use this template to lift up these concerns. Please reach out to Alicia Wilson at alicia@pifcoalition.org with any questions.

Additionally, the PIF coalition is hosting a webinar TODAY, December 3rd at 12 pm CT to learn more about the proposal, our coordinated response to this attack, and resources available for advocates and communities. PIF will also share a template comment for organizations and launch PIF’s organizational sign-on comment.
