NEW RESOURCES: SB 8 One Pager

We are sharing a new resource developed by NASW-TX SOGIE Committee: SB 8: Texas Women’s Privacy Act “Bathroom Bill”. This bill went into effect December 4, 2025. It restricts multi-occupancy bathrooms in state-owned facilities to sex assigned at birth, a policy that fuels harassment, surveillance, and discrimination against transgender and intersex people, and any person that does not conform to someone else's expectation of gender. 

But here’s the part many people don’t know:

SB 8 only applies to facilities owned by the State of Texas, like public schools, state universities, prisons and jails, state-funded family violence shelters, and state offices.

It does not apply to private organizations, and over-compliance in those spaces harms the very communities social workers are called to serve.

As social workers, we have a responsibility to stay informed, ground our actions in ethics, and prevent fear-based policy decisions from creating unnecessary barriers.
