NASW-TX, TMFT, TCA & TSCSW Joint Statement: Response to Paxton's Opinion re: SB 14

NASW-TX, along with Texas Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (TMFT), Texas Counseling Association (TCA), and Texas Society for Clinical Social Work (TSCSW) released a joint statement disagreeing with the recent opinion issued by Attorney General Paxton focusing on whether social workers are health care providers as defined in SB 14. 

Social workers should be aware that the Opinion does not independently create new criminal prohibitions applicable to licensed mental health professionals working within their scope of practice. 

NASW-TX will continue to advocate for the dignity, safety, and rights of transgender people in Texas, and the rights of social workers to practice freely in the state.
